Release 1.1
InBoxer software uses a new approach that typically blocks more than 99%
of unwanted email (spam) from your Inbox. InBoxer
analyzes the language used in the email you actually keep and compares it to
the language used in the email you don't keep. InBoxer quickly creates your
personal filter, based on your interests and the people you know. It accurately
sorts your email and protects your Inbox.
InBoxer learns continuously. If you don't want a message, give InBoxer that
example, and it separates out similar messages. After a few quick setup
steps, your mail will be sorted the way you want, and you won't have to look
at mail you don't want.
See the following headings for more information.
The new release of InBoxer contains the following new features.
Current users may be most interested in these changes.
- A new InBoxer monitor icon in the system tray flashes green when the software is actively filtering messages. (Typically, this happens right after Outlook downloads messages into your Inbox.) The monitor icon changes to a green envelope when you have unread messages in any watched folder. Double-click the green envelope to read the most recent unread messages in the watched folders.
- If you hover the mouse cursor over the InBoxer monitor icon, the software now shows you how many unwanted, good, and unsure messages you have received in the current run of Outlook.
- The InBoxer → Advanced menu now offers a Merge Statistics option for merging an external database of spam statistics with your current database. You can use this feature for sharing spam statistics between computers, or for merging additional statistics provided by the InBoxer team.á
- A new checkbox in the InBoxer → Control Panel → Apply Filters (Change) dialog enables the new "Mark as read" feature. If you check this box, all messages moved to the InBoxer-Blocked folder will be marked as "read".
- A new button on the Control Panel allows you to change the data directory that InBoxer uses to store spam statistics. With this feature, you can store your personal filters on a network drive. Only one system may access these files at a time. Simultaneous access by two users (or by two copies of Outlook from the same user) is not supported and will likely corrupt the file.
- Multiple Outlook profiles are now supported. When you upgrade to version 1.1 your personal filters will be copied into new profile specific files. Additional profiles use unique statistics files. If you revert to version 1.0 you will lose any changes to your statistics since the installation of version 1.1.
- Hotmail folders are now supported for filtering, and can be watched like any other Outlook mail folder in Outlook 2002 and more recent versions. (Outlook 2000 did not support Hotmail folders at all.) The Hotmail "junk mail" folder cannot be watched. This is a limitation of Microsoft Outlook.
- A new Advanced menu item, Filter Current Folder Now, lets you quickly filter your currently selected folder.
- The threshold sliders in the InBoxer → Control Panel → Apply Filters (Change) dialog (which set the threshold above which a message will be moved to the InBoxer-Blocked or InBoxer-Review folders) are now linked.
The Review threshold slider cannot be set higher than the Block threshold slider, nor can
the Block slider be set lower than the Review slider.
This prevents conflicting settings that might prevent InBoxer from doing any filtering.
- The Adults, Health, and Money statistics databases are smaller, and adapt faster to your personal definitions. In general, these databases have been superseded by the default database, and will be made into an optional download in a future version of the software. Other specialized databases for particular kinds of spam may also be made available for download.
- Uninstall now optionally uninstalls all data files, allowing you to do a complete uninstall of the program. The default behavior leaves your data files intact, while uninstalling the program files. This allows you to uninstall and install an upgrade of the software without losing your current spam statistics.
- The size of the impersonal database has been reduced substantially, and the database will now adapt much more quickly to your personal definition of spam. The database is still derived from more than 17,000 messages, but now retains only the most significant information.
- A new plug-in architecture allows developers with moderate skills in scripting languages to add specialized workflow or message handling behaviors to the software. For example, developers can add their own implementations of nonstatistical spam detection, performance monitoring, and mail processing algorithms.

InBoxer works with Microsoft Outlook 2000, 2002, and XP, and does not currently work
with Outlook Express. InBoxer has been tested only on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Windows
2000, and Windows XP, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows ME. Windows 95
is not supported.

When you run the InBoxer install program, it does a "preflight check" to
make sure that your configuration is supported. In some cases, the check will
report that your installation may work. If you continue the installation
at that point, we would be very interested in hearing how it works for you.

- Close Outlook. If you don't, the install program will ask you to do so before continuing.
On Windows NT, 2000, and XP you must have administrator privileges to install InBoxer.
Once installed, other users of the computer will have access to InBoxer, but their own configuration and training files.
- Launch the InBoxerSetup.exe program.
- After installation, the install program will offer to let you read this file, and
to start Outlook.
- The first time you start Outlook after installing InBoxer, two dialogs appear:
a registration dialog, and a setup wizard. The registration dialog
appears each time you start Outlook until you enter a valid activation code.
- Enter your email address and the InBoxer activation code if you have one.
You can leave the
activation code blank to start a 21-day free trial, and receive the activation code when
you purchase InBoxer.
- Continue by choosing a setup method, as described below.

Select one of two setup choices.
- Express Setup.
We highly recommend that all first time users choose Express Setup.
InBoxer automatically configures your system, and learns from your messages.
Go to the Correct any mistakes section for further
information. (If you wish to make changes later, you can run the setup wizard again from the
InBoxer menu.)
- Custom Setup. InBoxer
suggests a configuration, but you can add or remove specific configuration
items. In particular, Custom Setup lets you select a default set of message
statistics built from thousands of messages.
Note: Details about manual setup from the InBoxer Control Panel may be found in the
InBoxer Users Guide included with this software, or in the online InBoxer help.

Even after you set up InBoxer,
it continues to learn about your messages. If you find a message in the wrong folder,
highlight it and click Keep or Block to move it to your Inbox
or your InBoxer-Blocked folder. If you keep checking and sorting your
InBoxer-Review
folder, InBoxer will get better and better at keeping only the mail you want
in your Inbox.

You may have some senders
that you always want to hear from -- or ignore, no matter what the content of
their message is. Select InBoxer → Trust/Block to list senders or
their domains (such as all mail from spam.com) as bad or good. Just select a
message, click Trust/Block and select the fate for future mail from this
sender or domain. If you block a domain, you can override it for a specific
sender. Blocked mail is moved to the InBoxer-Blocked folder, where InBoxer
will learn from it.

If you have trouble with
anything, and your system meets the requirements listed above, check the troubleshooting guide, and please contact
us at: support@InBoxer.com, or by selecting Support/Contact Support on the InBoxer
menu. The Contact Support option prepares an email message for us that includes
your log files, and lets you describe your problem in detail. You will be able
to edit or cancel the email before it is sent.
